Welcome to Counseling Services
NEWSLETTER

In the Fall of 2007, Ohio University Southern began offering counseling services to address the mental health needs and concerns of students and faculty/staff who have concerns about their students. These services will once again be offered on campus.  The counseling office will be staffed by Christopher R. Smith, Ph.D.  Dr. Smith is a Post-Doctoral Fellow at Ohio University’s Counseling and Psychological Services

Dr. Smith will be on campus Mondays and Thursdays and will focus on providing education regarding mental health issues (i.e., depression, anxiety, stress management, etc.) and brief individual interventions with students.

Dr. Smith is available:
Monday 12 pm – 6pm
Wednesday 9 am – 3pm

Students wishing to speak with Dr. Smith may “drop in” during these hours with or without an appointment. Chris is also available for outreach and educational programming upon request.
To contact Dr. Smith regarding setting an appointment, mental health issues, or to request an outreach or educational presentation you may call (740) 533-4654, or visit him in Student Services.
If a student needs immediate mental health intervention, he or she may speak with Dr. Smith only when he is available on campus. He will not be available for crisis, emergenc, or individual counseling outside of his regularly scheduled days on campus.

A student needing immediate attention should contact:
DURING BUSINESS HOURS:
Robert Pleasant: (740) 533-4600
Shawnee Mental Health Center: (740) 533-0648

24/7 Crisis Line: 1-800-448-2273

An important clarification, however, about the role of the therapist at OU Southern is to emphasize that they will not be able to respond to crises or emergencies when they are not on campus. During days and times that the therapist is not on campus, students and faculty/staff concerned about an immediate need, such as in the case of one having thoughts or plans regarding harming oneself or someone else, may contact
Shawnee Mental Health Center at 740-533-0648 or the Crisis Line at 740-687 – 8255
Again, the therapist will not be available for crisis, emergency, or individual counseling outside of his regularly scheduled days on campus.
