Community Education classes are open to the general public regardless of educational background. These classes are self-supporting, and the fees collected from Community Education cover all instructional, administrative, and overhead cost of the program.
Classes are non-credit and do not carry credit applicable toward an Ohio University degree or transfer to other institutions. Classes are scheduled year round with each term typically running
4 to 6 weeks.
YOU MUST REGISTER AND ENROLL PRIOR TO THE FIRST CLASS SESSION. If the minimum enrollment for a class is not met, the class may be cancelled.

Register in the Office of Student Services in the Collins Building during business hours. You can pay the enrollment fee with a valid credit card, check or money order, or cash (cash payment must be less than $50.00).
NOTE: Enrollment in college credit classes still must be processed through OU’s Admissions Office. Community Education Registration and Enrollment Forms will not be accepted.

Students MUST register and enroll prior to the first class.
Payment is due when you enroll. Your enrollment in the class is not guaranteed until payment is received.
A full refund will be issued to all students if a class is cancelled. When you enroll in a class, you agree to pay the fee whether or not you attend. If you decide to withdraw from a class, you must do so within the designated period of at least 5 working days prior to the class start date. You will be issued a full refund.
If a payment is made by cash or check and a refund is required due to cancellation of the class (either by the University or the student), the refund could take up to six weeks to be processed. If you pay with by credit card, we can immediately credit your card back at the time of cancellation.
NO REFUND will be given for a class once it has started. A refund based on special circumstances must be requested in writing within seven calendar days after the class start date and is not guaranteed.
NOTE: A returned check does not eliminate a student’s responsibility to pay for the class.
No registrations or payments will be taken during the class.
Instructors are not permitted to collect registration forms or payments.
Lack of Enrollment
Community Education classes are self-supporting and all class related expenses are paid from registration fees. Classes that do not meet the minimum enrollment are subject to cancellation.
If that should happen, every effort will be made to notify the student by telephone to find an alternate class, or process a refund.
Emergency and Weather-related Closings
Community Education classes are cancelled only when Ohio University Southern is officially closed due to an emergency or severe weather. If OUS is not closed, Community Education classes will meet as scheduled.
Please check our website www.southern.ohiou.edu/pages/news-events/weather closings for weather or emergency-related cancellations and closings. Students can also listen to the local radio and television stations for announcements or call 740.533.4600 (press 5).
All Ohio University holiday closings will be observed and applied to Community Education classes.
Registration and Enrollment Forms are processed during our regular business hours and every effort is made to send students a confirmation. If you register online, you will need to print out a confirmation at the end of your transaction. If you are unsure of the class location, call the Office of Student Services 740.533.4600.
Reasonable accommodations will be provided upon request if you have a disability. Please notify Disability Services, 740.533.4600 a minimum of 2 weeks prior to the starting date of the class.

Class sizes are limited so early registration is recommended. If the class you want to take is full, you will be placed on a waiting list. If the class opens up, the Office of Student Services will notify you.
If you are 18 years of age or older, you may enroll in Community Education classes. High School graduation is not necessary. Students 16 or 17 years of age may enroll in some classes with written permission from parents or legal guardians, and the permission of the instructor, which must be received prior to the start of the class. Any other exceptions are noted in the class description.
Only persons officially registered and on the roster may attend the class.
Only one discount applies per class, per quarter. All discounts must be taken in the Office of Student Services. They cannot be added to an online registration.
60 Plus Program
Persons 60 years of age and older may enroll in noncredit class at ½ price.
Faculty & Staff
Faculty and Staff of OUS are eligible for ½ price discount except for field trips.
Alumni are eligible for $10.00 off the regular fee (not applicable with other discounts). You must be a registered member of the OUS Alumni Association to qualify for this discount. For more information regarding the Alumni Association contact the Office of Student Services at 740.533.4600.
Who can teach?
The Community Education Program does not require its instructors to have teaching degrees. Adults who have skills or knowledge they would like to share are invited to submit a course proposal. All proposals are reviewed and, if selected, the instructor is contacted by telephone. Instructors are responsible for developing their own course and materials.

How are Instructors/Facilitators Paid?
Instructors are paid $20.00 per hour. Contact the OUS Business Office at 740.533.4642 for further details on payment arrangements.
Instructors are not permitted to collect registration forms or payments.
