Illya Filshtinskiy is returning to Ironton to open the 2011-2012 season. Illya will bring the Mains Rotunda Steinway concert grand piano to life with style and
energy! Along with his international stature at the piano, Illya has Ironton and Tri-State area ties. His parents are Elena Filshtinska-Burwell and David Burwell, originally of Ironton. He is the grandson of Carolyn Burwell of Ironton.
Illya is a Ukrainian-born, naturalized American and a graduate of The Juilliard School with a Bachelor Degree in piano performance. |
 |
He also holds a Masters Degree in Piano Performance from Manhattan School of Music in New York City. The 24-year-old pianist began studying piano at age 6 in his native Kharkov, Ukraine, and completed the Kharkov Music School before moving to America in 2000.
Illya made his orchestra debut 2002 at age 15, playing Schumann’s Piano Concerto with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra. That same year he performed at Carnegie Hall as the winner of the World Piano Competition. He has performed across the United States, as well as in Europe and Asia – and of course in Ironton – numerous times. Illya last performed for the Lawrence County
Concert Series in 2004.

Simple Gifts is a folk duo from Central Pennsylvania who play traditional
instrumental tunes from Appalachia, Middle Eastern countries, and many European nations.
In addition to the concert at Ohio University Southern, Simple Gifts will be conducting a school residency program to introduce local children to the instruments and repertoire of traditional folk music.
Linda Littleton began her musical studies with classical violin lessons at age seven. As a student at Princeton University, Linda majored in philosophy, with a minor in music and a specialty of Philosophy of Music. |
She has a strong background as a classical violinist, having served as principal second violin in the Nittany Valley Symphony.
Karen Hirshon grew up singing and harmonizing hymns at church. At age 10 she began violin lessons, and three years later, her fascination with blues and American folk music lead her to study folk guitar. She studied and was influenced by ragtime, classical, American string band music, African drumming, blues, gospel, and jazz. During the 1970’s, Karen toured nationally with the bluegrass band Whetstone Run and helped found the American old-time group, Rustical Quality String Band, with which she has released two albums.
Linda Littleton and Karen Hirshon, the Simple Gifts Duo, will offer a free folk musician’s workshop on Friday November 11, 2011 from 4 pm to 8 pm at the Mains Rotunda in the Riffe Building.

Performing under the direction of Paul Hesson, a former member of Disney World’s “Dapper Dans” and bass singer with the 1993 International College Quartet Champion “Heritage Station” from Marshall University, the Singing Kernels was founded in Ashland, Kentucky, 22 years ago. The group is a chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society.
This traditional harmony is a truly American art form, with roots that stretch back more than 100 years. There are four parts: tenor (the highest notes), lead (the melody line), bass (the lowest notes) and baritone (the part that fills in all the empty places, according to tenors, leads and basses).
With members hailing from all parts of the Tri-State, the group is locally known for the ever-popular “Singing Valentines” and its annual Christmas show, which the Kernels are honored to present this year as part of the Lawrence County Concert Series.

The Violauta Duo is guitarist Júlio Alves and flutist Wendell Dobbs. “Violauta is coined from the Brazilian word for guitar, violão, and the Italian word for flute, flauta. This coinage accurately describes the ethnic and national diversity of the music the two Marshall University music faculty have explored over the past few years--modern music from North and South America and ancient music from Europe, from Hotteterre to Giuliani and Pujol to Tower.
Dr. Dobbs has shared his outstanding talent with the ICA audience several times. His artistry has been favorably compared to that of flutist Sir James Galway for technical skill and musical interpretations. For the past two years he has teamed with Júlio Alves to create unique musical sounds with a Brazilian flavor.
Soprano Linda Dobbs joins the duo for this program with folk songs by Seiber and Copland.
Join the Violauta Duo and Linda Dobbs for an evening of musical expression and variety.

Three dynamic and engaging musicians from the Cincinnati area come together to perform for us as Brava Music.
Cellist Jennifer Higgins Wheatley is an international performer whose tone has been praised as reminiscent of DuPre and Rostropovich. She is known for drawing in audiences with a performance style that combines both haunting intimacy and wild abandon.
Melody Wallace is considered by the many musicians she has accompanied to be one of the most sensitive and responsive accompanists in the business. Her ability to blend nuance with brilliant technique makes her one of the best collaborative pianists around. |
 |
Violinist Nancy Illman's appearance in Ironton follows a nationwide concert tour of China with the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony. As concertmaster of two local orchestras in Cincinnati, Nancy has been praised for her commanding stage presence, strong leadership and engaging performances.
This is the group's debut as a trio and they are excited for the opportunity to offer a live audience such great works as Beethoven's Archduke Trio and the Brahms’ cello sonata.

The Petar Jankovic Ensemble is a collaboration of international award-winning classical guitarist Petar Jankovic (Serbia/USA) and a string quartet comprised of brilliant international musicians from the prestigious Indiana University: Violin I - Sophie Bird of New Zealand; Violin II - Grace Kim of Korea; Viola - Rose Wollman of the United States; and Cello - Maria Martinez of Spain. |
The group currently tours with Spanish and Latin American classical music programs, playing original arrangements by some of the icons of this repertoire. The string quartet and guitar blend infuses new vigor and a fresh outlook in combination with the group’s expressive and enjoyable renditions.
Jankovic’s guitar studies started at age eight in his native Serbia, where he later earned a degree in classical guitar from the Music Academy in Belgrade. At 16, he delivered his first professional performance. Four years later, the Community College in Belgrade invited the young, talented Jankovic to share his expertise with novice guitar students. Jankovic began his performance career in 1985, and has since delighted audiences at concerts and enlightened students in his master
classes throughout Europe and the United States. He went on to earn a Master’s Degree and the esteemed Artist Diploma Degree from the renowned Indiana University School of Music, where he currently teaches.
