The next notable item we found is the size of the horses here at Bishop Burton. Our style of riding horses range from 14.2 hands tall to 16 hands (1 hand equals 4 inches). Even our personal horses are around 15 hands. The typical riding horse here at Bishop Burton is 15 hands to 17.3 hands tall. They seem like elephants to us. The difference in bone structure is amazing as well. The horses at Bishop Burton are much bulkier and wider from shoulder to shoulder and hip to hip. We would guess a good 3-4 inches wider than at home. The typical horse breeding over here involves some type of Draft cross. Usually Draft/Thoroughbred or Draft/Paint. This creates a huge and massive Warmblood. The reason for wanting size is simple. Bigger horses make bigger movement. Horse A might be just as well trained as horse B, but when asked to do upper level movements, such as extensions, horse B looks like he offers more because he is larger. Needless to say we are having fun with these ground-covering horses. In the 2 pictures, one horse Nikki is next to is the 15.3 hands tall and the other is 17.1 hands tall. We decided to show the difference. Note: The colour did not turn out this go round.
