We mentioned earlier about the difference in hay but we were not able to mention the difference in grain. Well we have learned about the grain and we wanted to share this information. Here in the UK they have not truly switched over to feeding complete feeds. In the US all of our nutrients are mixed entirely into one single pellet. We then feed different amounts of pellets at different protein levels according to the horses weight and needs. In the UK, the feed they call grain is not condensed. It is normal to see items like crushed peas and crushed moist corn in the feed. It seems very odd to me but it is different to see the feed before it has been made into a pellet. Other nutrients like barley and sugar beet have not been combined into the grain. They have to add the different amounts as they feed. Salt even has to be mixed in when they feed. This seems to make feeding more difficult, however we can see where it would be easier to match the amounts of nutrients to the horses needs. |
