Cross Country

This is the Cross-Country event at the Bishop Burton Horse Trials. The event is split up into different divisions including non-affiliated, pre-novice, intermediate, novice and advanced. The participants then jump over different heights and numbers of fences according to how advanced they are. The number of fences usually ranges between twelve to twenty. They include water jumps, woods jumps, ditches, solid and hedge jumps. They are supposed to be replicas of what the rider may find if he or she was riding out in the country. They have an ideal time of four minutes to complete the course in. They can also be docked points for refusals and knocked jumps. Again, the rider with the least docked points and the best time wins. We were able to watch some of our friends compete in this event too. The picture on the left is of the water jump on the pre-novice course. The horse had to go down a ditch and into the water. They then came out of the water and over a jump. The picture on the right is of several different combinations on the Cross Country course. The rider has either an easy route or hard route to take to complete the jumps. The hard route takes less time but is harder. The easier route takes more time but is easier for the horse. It is up to the rider which he chooses. We spent the entire day on Saturday jump judging. We sat at one jump and watched the horses go over. We made marks on the score sheet depending on if they made it over the jump clearly or if they had refusals. If they had three refusals they were disqualified. We were able to learn a lot from this experience and see some awesome horses. At the end of 12 hours our bums were thankful that the Cross Country was over.
