The Final Reflections of My Self Discovery

Kelli Faulkner

Along with learning about a new culture this week in the Dominican Republic, I have learned a lot about myself. I have learned there are people in the world who are in a greater state of poverty than I would have ever imagined. It has definitely made me realize that most of my needs are just simply wants. I have learned to appreciate the things I have and perhaps don’t have, if that makes any sense.
Another concept that I have discovered about the people of the Dominican is that most people here possess something that I don’t see in many American families. Most of them have a mutual respect for each other, there is low crime, and the people seem to be very polite. These are traits I see lacking in our culture. I truly believe the United States is the best country in the world, but imagine if we had these values incorporated into our physical wealth. I am sure some would not agree, be we can all learn a lot by listening to the voice of the Dominican people.
