All Star Band 2007

The Ohio University Southern Diversity Task Force Program for Spring Quarter (2007) featured a guest performance by JV Collier, Bassist for Grammy Award Winner Bruce Hornsby.  JV Collier and Dr. Charles Jarrett combined talents to create "The Road to Success," a program on the principles of success and achievement within a musical format designed for area youth. JV offered a motivational speech on the role of passion as a key component of any successful career - young people heard the message loud and clear! Dr. J's All Star Band was created in the process as JV Collier (bass) was joined on stage by student Barry Gillum (keyboards), Phil Osborrn (guitar), Robert Harris (guitar), Dr. Pat McCoy (drums/percussion), and Dr. Charles Jarrett (drums/percussion).  OUS Diversity Task Force members partnered with Ironton City Schools so that high school and junior high school students would receive JV's inspirational message on superior performance.

Interview recorded Friday, April 20, 2007

JV began the program with a solo performance (click here for MP3), then quickly delivered his inspirational message.  Students were affected for the second straight year by JV's heartfelt message and warm personality. JV connected with students on a personal level and delivered the message that success results from discipline, perseverance, engagement, and having a passion for one's craft. JV graciously appeared on the television program "Face to Face" hosted by Robert Pleasant and taught a university course on the history of American Jazz with assistance from Dr. Pat McCoy and Phil Osborne. Excerpts of a dialogue between JV and Dr. J. appeared on area television and plans continue for a music lab to assist electronic media students named after JV .
