Dr. Charles Jarrett has adopted a philosophy of research designed to accommodate service to the university and community. Academic research should be integrated into the classroom and disseminated through professional channels for the resolution of "real world" issues and social problems. Dr. Jarrett initiated a research project in the Sea Islands of South Carolina that has demonstrated this commitment to university and community service. Dr. Jarrett's study of Gullah culture and language lead directly to the creation of a cultural enrichment program entitled "Journey To Wholeness." The cultural enrichment series has featured visits by representatives of the Gullah community to Ohio University Southern Campus. The series has included community-based programs for residents of southeastern Ohio and various professional organizations like Operation Be Proud, The Oak Ridge Treatment Center, and Los Amigos Internacionale Journey To Wholeness has become a regularly scheduled class under the direction of Dr. Charles Jarrett, a course in social diversity and cultural enrichment offered to undergraduates at Ohio University Southern Campus. Dr. Jarrett continues to assist in the preservation of Gullah culture by introducing members of our university and community to the people of the Sea Islands.
