Ohio University Southern Emergency Procedures Quick Reference
ACCIDENT/ INJURY. Call 9-911 from a campus phone or 911 from a cell or pay phone. Relay exact information and type of emergency. Dial 0 to report emergency to University personnel. Send a volunteer team to wait for emergency vehicle. Comfort any person needing medical assistance. Record pertinent information about the incident for completion of the University incident report.
BOMB THREAT. Write down what the caller says and notes about background noise, clues to caller’s location. Call 9-911. Call Bob Rader, physical plant director, at 740-534-4870 and list your telephone number plus 9-911, or 911 from a cell or pay phone. Stay by your phone for Bob Rader’s return call and instructions regarding further actions. If threat appears imminent, activate fire alarms in all buildings. Evacuate buildings, making sure restrooms and study areas are clear.
EXPLOSIVE DEVICE. Report suspicious mail or suspicious package to Carol Allen, Student Center Director, or Bob Rader, physical plant director, at 740-534-4870 and list your telephone number plus 911. DO NOT touch or remove package. If threat appears imminent, activate fire alarms in all buildings. Evacuate buildings, making sure restrooms and study areas are clear.
CHEMICAL/ TOXIC. Assess general threat and/or condition of victim. Evacuate area or building. Call Bob Rader, physical plant director, at 740-534-4870 and list your telephone number plus 911, or 9-911 from a campus phone, or 911 from a cell or pay phone. Meet emergency personnel. Record pertinent information about the incident for completion of the University incident report.
FIRE. Activate fire alarm and evacuate building, making sure restrooms and study area are clear. If you hear the alarm while in a closed room, feel the door before you open it. If hot, LEAVE IT CLOSED. Break a window with a desk or chair and wait for help.
INTRUDER-WITH WEAPON OR SHOWING HARMFUL INTENT. Call 9-911 from a campus phone or 911 from a cell or pay phone. Calmly attempt to remove the intruder if possible. DO NOT engage physically or verbally. Direct students and faculty/ staff away from the area. IF intruder begins to fire weapon, take cover and urge others to do so.
POWER OUTAGE. Call Bob Rader, physical plant director, at 740-534-4870, who will contact provider and assess the situation and duration. Keep students in classrooms and buildings until situation is assessed. Emergency lights in halls and stairways will come on and burn for at least an hour.
TORNADOES. Southern does not have an emergency siren system so no alarm will be heard. The dean’s office and physical plant have emergency radio alarms. If a tornado is threatening, both offices will send out staff to alert others and direct them into hallways and away from glass. Do not delay these messengers or argue/ discuss them.
THE DEAN WILL SERVE AS THE ONLY INSTITUTIONAL SPOKESPERSON.
REMEMBER: ONCE THE POLICE OR EMERGENCY PERSONNEL ARRIVE, THEY ARE IN CHARGE!
